ASHES Q&A’s

V&T Window

As Ashes fever will be gripping the nation we’re delighted to have two legends of the game joining us in the bar. First up is Merv Hughes on Sunday 2nd July from 6pm, followed by Mike Gatting on Tuesday 18th July from 7pm. Tickets are £25.

With his huge bristling moustache and confrontational manner Merv Hughes was the enforcer in the Australian attack that dominated Ashes cricket during the late 80’s and early 90’s. In 20 Ashes Test Merv’s whole-hearted commitment to Australia’s cause earned him 75 wickets and legendary status. As well as being a great cricketer he is a top bloke, who is full of fun and mischief.

Winning the Ashes in Australia is something very few England captains have achieved, and Mike Gatting is a member of this select group. Gatt captained England to success in 1986/87 after a journalist, early in the tour, wrote: ‘England only have three problems her in Australia; they can’t bat, they can’t bowl and they can’t field.’ Away from England Gatt was Middlesex’s most successful captain and one of the club’s greatest players.
